Does Everyone in Your Home Know the Emergency Plan?

Fire Prevention Month is a good time to ask a simple question: would everyone in your home know what to do if an alarm sounded tonight? In an October 7 checklist, Alaska Housing Finance Corporation encouraged households to test alarms, review everyday hazards and practice their escape plan. Oregon’s State Fire Marshal also scheduled an October 7 session focused on lithium-ion battery fires—a reminder to pay attention to the rechargeable devices around us. Set aside time to review your exits and outdoor meeting place, follow device manufacturers’ charging instructions, and keep emergency contacts where household members can find them. During a calm, safe period, document previously identified water and gas shutoff locations and electrical-panel information with the ShutSafe Home Kit. If there is fire, smoke, a suspected gas leak or an unsafe electrical condition, get to safety and follow emergency-service and utility guidance. Make your household information easier to find at shutsafehomekit.com. Sources: Alaska Housing Finance Corporation, October 7, 2026; Oregon State Fire Marshal, Fire Safety Webinars.
