When the Power Goes Out: Avoid Creating a Second Emergency

A power outage is a reason to prepare before the lights go out. Keep emergency contacts and a household plan accessible, and review how your backup equipment should be used.

CPSC advises operating portable generators outdoors only, at least 20 feet from homes, with exhaust facing away. Never run a generator in a home or garage, even with doors and windows open. Follow its manufacturer’s instructions.

Install carbon monoxide alarms with battery backup on every level and outside sleeping areas. If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, get everyone outside to fresh air immediately and call 911.

During a calm, safe period, document previously identified home shutoff locations and emergency contacts. Show household members where the information is kept. ShutSafe Home Kit helps organize this reference information. Follow emergency-service and utility guidance whenever a hazard occurs.
